Tertiary students with a student loan will be required to repay their student loan at arate of 12% of their total gross earnings above the $367 per week threshold. Ifa student earns under this amount, then no student loan deductions are requiredin that weekly period.
During thelonger school holidays where a tertiary student is working full-time andearning over $367 gross, if they are still registered as a full-time tertiarystudent they can apply for a ‘Student loan repayment deduction exemptioncertificate’. Students must apply for these themselves and they can do byapplying online with the IRD

An employeris legally obliged to deduct student loan amounts unless the student providesthem with a current exemption certificate. The exemption applies for upto one tax year 1 April – 31 March at a time.
