Leave without pay reminders

An employee can take leave without pay if their employer agrees and here are some reminders:
- The agreement to allow leave without pay should be recorded in writing
- Watch out if they take leave of more than one week – you need to agree on the impact on their anniversary date
- Implications on Public Holidays, bereavement leave, alternative holidays, and sick leave during leave without pay

Different types of minimum wage rates

There are three different types of minimum wages rates: adults, starting-out and training. For details on each rate check out: https://www.employment.govt.nz/hours-and-wages/pay/minimum-wage/different-types-of-minimum-wage-rates/

Employing school-age workers

There is no minimum wage for employees under 16 years of age. If you employ under-16s you must not let their work get in the way of attending school. https://www.business.govt.nz/hiring-and-managing/hiring-people/minimum-pay-rules/

Kilometre Rate for business use of vehicles – unchanged due COVID

The IR Commissioner recently announced that the rates for calculating the kilometre rates for using your vehicle for business purposes will remain at the 2018-2019 rates. The two-tier rates start at 79c per kilometre for the business portion of the first 14,000 kilometres travelled by the vehicle in a year and can be used when reimbursing an employee.
